Configuring SCCM 2012 SP1 - Part 1

If you haven't installed SCCM yet you can check my last post HERE.

Once everything is installed the first thing to do is to check the site was successfully published to AD. In order to check that, open the ConfigMgr Console, click on the Administration Node, expand Overview, expand Hierarchy Configuration and click on Active Directory Forests. As you can see in the picture below that Publishing Status is Succeeded.

The next step is to configure boundaries. Boundaries are used for automatic site assignment and direct clients to content locations.

Click on Boundaries and click on Create Boundary.

Specify a Description, a Type, a Starting IP addresd, an Ending IP address and click on OK. The type you are going to choose depends on your requirements and environment.

Now it's time to create a Boundary Group. Boundaries by itself have no effect on site assignment and content location, they only take effect once assigned to a Boundary Group which has the site assignment and content location configuration.

So go ahead and click on Boundary Group then on Create Boundary Group.

Give it a name, click on Add select and Boundary you have just created, click on OK.

Now click on the References tab, tick the Use this boundary group for site assignment, select the Assigned site and Add a site server which clients in this Boundary Group can locate content. Click on OK.

OK the boundaries are now set up. It's time to enable some Discovery Methods to populate our database with some useful information.

Click on Discovery Methods and double click Active Directory Forest Discovery Properties.

Tick the Enable Active Directory Forest Discovery box. I'm not going to tick the other boxes as I have already created the boundary I require and I don't want any not required boundaries created. If I require it in the future I can manually create it. Click on OK. Click on Yes to run the full discovery.

Double click Active Directory System Discovery. This will discover all computers from the OU(s) we specify and populate the SCCM database with the new objects. So tick the Enable Active Directory System Discovery and click on the STAR button.

Click on Browse and select the OU where the computer objects will be discovered from. If you want to discover all computers from the entire AD just select the root of the tree. Click on OK twice.

All ADs I have seen in my life had at least a few computer objects populated in AD which no longer existed. In some companies this number can be hundreds or thousands. Of course we don't want all this rubbish brought to the SCCM database. Until SCCM 2007 the only way to avoid this was to keep AD clean, but now in SCCM 2012 there are 2 new options that target this specific problem. Now let's enable them.
Click on the Options tab and tick the 2 boxes and click on OK. Click on Yes.

Double click Active Directory User Discovery. Tick the Enable Active Directory User Discovery and click on the STAR. Click on browse and select the OU where the user objects will be discovered from. Click on OK twice and click on Yes to run the full discovery.

Next post will be about Client Settings and Client Installation.
