Sequencing SQL Server 2008 R2 - Recipe

I'm going to sequence SQL Server 2008 R2 using App-V 4.6 SP1 in a Windows XP SP3.

Before you start sequencing it, install Windows Installer 4.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and restart the computer.

Launch the Sequencer and click on Create a New Application Package. Click on Next.

Make sure you don't get any errors or warnings. Click Next and next again.

Select the setup file from the source and click Next.

Give the package a name and click Next. The setup will start.

In the splash screen, click on Installation and then on New Installation or add features to an existing installation.

Click on OK. Then enter the license and click on Next. Accept the license and click on Next.

Now click on Install to install the setup support files.

When it's finished, click on Next. Leave the defaut installation (SQL Server Feature Installation) and click on Next.

Select the required features, change the installation location and click on Next. Click on next 4 more times and finally click on install.

During the installation the SQL Server Management Studio will crash twice. Just click on Don't Send.

After the installation is completed you should get the screen below. Click on Close.

Now tick the I am finished installing box and click on Next.

After it finishes collecting all the changes, do not launch any applications. Otherwise when you launch SQL Server Management Studio you will get the same error as you got during installation.  Just click on Next.

Click on Next twice again and finally click on Create. When it's finished processing the package click on Close.

The first time you launch one of the applications it will take some time to load because we did not launch the applications during sequencing to avoid that error when launching SQL Server Management Studio.

  1. Some shortcuts will work however the SQL Server Configuration Manager shortcut may not because the App-V sequence doesn't allow the SQL Server WMI Provider to install properly. My sequencing attempt on 32bit Win7 produced the error: Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is unreachable. Note that you can only manage SQL Server 2005 and later servers with SQL Server Configuration Manager. Invalid Namespace [0x8004100e]

  2. That's correct. Perhaps it's a good idea to remove its shortcut during sequencing.
